BCAAs and amino acids: what they actually do and whether you need them

Probably not. If you already eat enough protein or drink whey, you are covered. BCAAs are just three of the nine essential amino acids your muscles need, and research shows BCAAs alone build less muscle than complete protein or a full EAA blend. Whey already contains them all, so a separate BCAA product is a preference, not a necessity.

What BCAAs and EAAs actually are

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and your body uses about twenty of them to build and repair everything, including muscle. Nine of them are called essential amino acids, or EAAs, because your body cannot make them on its own. They have to come from food.

Three of those nine have a branched molecular shape: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These three are the branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs. A BCAA product is just those three, usually sold as a flavored powder. An EAA product contains all nine essential amino acids.

Leucine acts as the trigger for muscle protein synthesis, the process that builds and repairs muscle tissue. But a trigger is not the whole job: to actually build muscle protein, your body needs all nine essential amino acids present as raw material.

Do BCAAs alone actually work?

The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) position stand on essential amino acid supplementation concludes that BCAAs alone are less effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis than a complete protein source or a full EAA blend, because muscle building needs all nine essential amino acids present, not just three.

Complete protein sources already deliver BCAAs as part of the package: whey protein, eggs, chicken, fish and dairy all contain the full amino acid profile. If your daily protein intake is adequate (roughly 1.4 to 2.0 g per kg of bodyweight per day for most training adults), an extra scoop of the three BCAAs adds very little on top.

When it might make sense anyway

  • Training fasted and want something to sip: a flavored amino drink is a low-calorie way to get taste and a training ritual, without the bulk of a full shake. Treat it as convenience, not an advantage.
  • Avoiding dairy: an amino product is a lighter alternative to a milk-based whey shake. A full EAA product covers more than BCAA alone if you go this route.
  • Want electrolytes and energy in the same drink: some amino products add caffeine and electrolytes, functioning as a light pre-workout and hydration drink rather than a pure amino supplement.

What UnReal actually stocks

Our amino shelf is the ON (Optimum Nutrition) Amino Energy + Electrolytes, 285 g tub, 30 servings, in Tangerine, Watermelon, Strawberry and Pineapple. This is not "just BCAAs": alongside its amino acids it has added caffeine and electrolytes, so it functions more like a light pre-workout and hydration drink. If you want maximum amino acid coverage per baht, whey protein still wins. Check the current price on the product page.

Frequently asked

Do I need BCAAs if I already drink whey protein?
No, probably not. Whey is a complete protein, so it already contains all three BCAAs plus the other six essential amino acids, and research shows complete protein outperforms BCAAs alone for building muscle. A separate BCAA product only makes sense for a specific preference, like a low-calorie drink during fasted training or a dairy-free option.
What is the difference between BCAAs and EAAs?
BCAAs are three of the nine essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. EAAs are all nine. Your body needs all nine present to build muscle protein, which is why a full EAA product or a complete protein like whey beats BCAAs alone.
